Sign2mint


Sign2MINT is a project being developed at the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics and is dedicated to the development of a specialized sign lexicon. For this purpose, technical signs from different STEM fields are collected and developed by experts and, after coordination, included in the lexicon. The goals of the project are the collection of a total of 5000 specialized signs and a long-term establishment of these in different areas of life such as school, university and sign language interpreting. Especially the accessibility and the reduction of communication barriers between spoken and signed languages are in the focus of this project.
In this way, excellent researchers can be given the right working tools to deliver excellent research results – which promotes equal opportunity diversity in the scientific landscape.
The Sign2MINT project received financial support of 450,000 euros from August 1, 2019 to April 30, 2022 by the Max Planck Foundation. With this funding, the Sign2MINT team has succeeded in creating an online specialist sign lexicon (www.sign2mint.de) with a total of more than 5,200 collected and developed specialist signs from various MINT areas (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geosciences, medicine , computer science, astronomy) to make them publicly accessible for all users.
